The Botvlet 520 was built in 1984 using a frame plan from the Rotterdam Harbour Museum, Maritime Museum Rotterdam (MMR). Documentation is available. Client to build, Heer Uiterwijk and designer/builder Boot Service Reeuwijk, both from Reeuwijk at the time, have produced an extremely beautiful and unique model.
She is a unique and rare, over-seam, copper riveted, commissioned, Mahogany Wooden Botvlet, named "De Draak" from 1984. Truly a joy to sail and a joy to behold. Makes many a head turn. The Draak is very spacious, this because there is no walking space occupied by an inboard engine, but the Vlet just has an outboard engine, placed in a bun (is an open water filled compartment) in the back of the Vlet. Because of this the Vlet is also steered with the tiller, which gives the real experience of an old wooden sloop. Just these 2 aforementioned feature make it a unique Vlet. The bun also gives immediately stable and good sailing characteristics, because the weight of the outboard engine does not hang completely behind, but just has its weight more hanging in the sloop. This gives a better weight point. Also, the Vlet has excellent sailing and maneuvering properties by the limited draft (30cm) with matching nice length (5.20mtr.) and limited width (2.10mtr.) with still room for 8 people and nice wide teak cockpit floor. In addition, for stability on the underwater ship length stabilization fins (2 bilge keels) are fitted. With the limited height (60cm) you can get to many special places. The height is a big plus for the low authentic wooden bridges and in nature where you can get to shallow, narrow and beautiful quiet places. The Vlet is a real head turner, both in the water and in transport. The over-seam varnished Mahogany stands out, along with the teak deck and Cable fender all around. The meeting of the over-seam Mahogany in the point is beautifully finished with a solid wood point. All of this adds character to the Vlet. The sloop runs over the teak deck almost completely flat. This really gives a great boat line.
The vlet does not have, as previously mentioned, a sloping foredeck toward the point, which many do. The sag has been taken out, as it is called in technical terms. It brings out the flat boat line very nicely, giving more and better visibility and improving the underpass. The Vlet is equipped with a Rhino BLX70 Electric motor with 2 main batteries and 1 spare (good for a full day of sailing). One of the photos still shows the sloop with a 15 hp Mercury. This photo is from early 2021 and the Mercury has been traded in for an electric Rhino. The Rhino BLX70 is from July 2021, professional long-tail version. Heaviest model in the 12V version. The Rhino is easy to disconnect from the Vlet and take with you compared to a gasoline outboard because of its low weight 12kg. The Vlet is very suitable for places where environment and noise are leading, such as canals in cities, places like Giethoorn and Nature and Silence area. As well as in areas where it requires a more limited boat size, and you still like to be with guests. Because of the silent sailing, you will enjoy the rippling water and the surroundings to the fullest, you will hear the reeds rustling and you will merge into nature, on and around the water.
