The 16m2 with sail number 1808 is in a very nice condition and was completely restored at a specialized shipyard in Zwartsluis ten years ago in a very professional manner. The sailboat has only sailed a few times since then and has been dry for many years in a beautiful shed. The boat is equipped with a beautiful wooden outboard motor seat. This sixteen-square is really a very beautiful classic sailboat.
The sixteen-square was designed by Hendrik Bulthuis, a barber from Bergum, who had previously designed the BM. He designed the boat for a competition in 1931, where the requirements were that the boat could be built easily, and could be sailed by anyone. Bulthuis used the same construction method for his design as for the BM, where the skin of the boat is built up from many narrow wooden slats. This construction method makes it possible to create rather complex round shapes in a simple way. Because of the similarity in building method with Bulthuis' first design, the sixteen-square is also called "BM", or also "Enlarged BM". In 1931 the sixteen-square was recognized as a racing boat by the North Netherlands Water Sports Association.
The sixteen-square has a hull length of 6 meters, and a width of 1.92 meters. The hull shape of the 16m² ensures that the boat is very stable in the water. The boat has a fixed keel, which protrudes about 80 cm deep. The mainsail has an area of 12 m², and it is gaff rigged. This has the advantage that a smaller mast is needed for a relatively large sail area, because the gaff sticks out above the top of the mast when the rig is hoisted. The advantage of this is that the mast is easy to strike. In front of the mast a lifting jib of 4 m² is attached. In the touring version this is attached to the forestay with levers. This is not the case with racing boats, so there is the possibility of trimming. The boat has a hull speed of about 11 kilometers per hour. However, due to its flat underwater hull, it is possible to plan with a sixteen-square. As a result, the maximum speed of the boat is about 15 kilometers per hour. For sailing over high waves, it is somewhat less suitable because the boat is rather sensitive to pipe water due to its flat underwater hull.
A road trailer is included and the year of construction is somewhere in the vicinity of 1940.
