The Contest 33 is a sailing yacht that originated in the 1970s and is known for its robust construction and seaworthy characteristics. This particular model, built in 1972, is a polyester S-frame with a length of 10 meters, a width of 3.15 meters, and a draft of 1.60 meters. The air draft is 12 meters, making the ship suitable for both open water and inland waters with bridges. The interior headroom is 1.90 meters, providing a comfortable living space on board.
The interior of the Contest 33 is designed for comfortable living on board. There are two fixed berths and two additional berths available, making the ship suitable for a crew of up to four people. The accommodation includes a dining area, a stove, a refrigerator, hot water, and an electric shower. The toilet is electric and discharges directly into open water. The water tank has a capacity of 400 liters, and there is a 20-liter waste water tank available.
The boat is equipped with a Lombardini inboard diesel engine from 2015 with a power of 27 hp, distributed over three cylinders. The engine has approximately 2500 operating hours and consumes an average of 2.2 liters of diesel per hour. The fuel tank has a capacity of 160 liters. The cruising speed is around 10 km/h, with a maximum speed of 12 km/h. The engine is equipped with instruments such as a fuel tank gauge, oil pressure gauge, temperature gauge, and tachometer.
For extra maneuverability, there is an electric bow thruster. The electrical installation consists of a battery charger, alternator, inverter, and a solar panel. The onboard voltage is 12v and 220v.
In terms of navigation, the Contest 33 is equipped with a wide range of equipment, including AIS, depth meter, GPS, chart plotter, compass, log/speedometer, VHF radio, and wind meter. There is a liferaft on board, as well as a self-draining cockpit and an electric bilge pump.
The sail plan consists of a mainsail and a furling jib, attached to an aluminum mast. The boat has one mast. The sails and cushions are stored dry and will be placed back on board in May. Steering is done outside via a steering wheel, and the ship has a single rudder.
On deck, the boat is equipped with a teak deck, sprayhood, pulpit and pushpit seats, guardrail, swim platform, and swim ladder. There are two anchors present, attached with chain, and a manual windlass. In the cockpit area, new lockers, speakers, a gas bottle box, and a Vetus hydraulic steering system have recently been installed.
The boat was last taken out of the water for maintenance in 2024. The antifouling was last applied in 2021, and a new layer is scheduled for May 2024. The boat is currently on the hard and will be relaunched after the auction. No signs of osmosis have been detected.
The previous owner undertook long sea voyages with this ship, including a trip to Brazil. The current owner has used the ship sparingly, mainly transferring it from the IJsselmeer to Kortgene via inland waters. The ship has been used for vacations and weekend trips.
The Contest 33 is known for its stable sailing behavior, even in strong winds. This makes the ship suitable for both novice and experienced sailors who value a solid and predictable sailing experience.
This Contest 33 from 1972 combines classic lines with modern adaptations. With a recent engine, extensive navigation equipment, and a functional layout, this ship offers opportunities for both recreational sailing and longer voyages. The boat is ready to be relaunched after the planned antifouling treatment in May 2024 and provides a solid foundation for new adventures on the water.
