This special, typical Zeeland, Thoolse Hoogaars is designed by Gipon and made at the yard prima. She is very suitable for sailing on the Wadden Sea and shallow waters.
The Hoogaars is a very old type of ship, the oldest known mention dates back to 1488, and was originally a small barge for general use, as a cargo ship, fishing vessel, market barge or ferry. This ship most appeals to the imagination. In the second half of the nineteenth century it was the most characteristic vessel in the waters of Zeeland. This type of ship was used to fish for mussels and shrimp. The Hoogaars is a seaworthy sailing vessel that needs very little water to move around. The main feature of this flat-bottomed vessel is a long, straight and pointed bow. The sides of the ship are convex to the outside. The sharply falling prow causes the ship to glide over those waves and take on relatively little tube water. They are known as dry ships.
