Frans Maas designed the Hawk42 in 1968 especially for the Fastnet race. Several were built, including construction number 249 The Calypso has a cutter rig, consisting of a mainsail, (furling) genoa and (furling) jib. These sails are from 2019 and were measured and delivered by Zwaan Sails from Lelystad. The mainsail is partly battened and has 3 reefs. Our experience is that from wind force 4/5 and a high to windward course the first reef can be put in and this hardly affects the speed. Both the genoa and the jib have a UV protection and roll by means of a Furlex system. The sheets run to the cockpit and are operated by 4 winches. The Calypso gets up to speed quickly. Sailing close to the wind, the ship starts to heel from wind force 3 to 4, after which it is stable on the rudder. Sailing close to the wind, we always quickly set a boom (there are 2, they are secured on the roof), with the mainsail on the other side, this is a very comfortable course.
The Calypso is a classic racer that regularly elicits compliments.
