History
A ship with 9 lives, on its way to its 10th. A special boat is offered at Boatauction.com. A true Standfast, specially designed and built for participation in the 1985/ 1986 Whitbread Round the World Race (now the Volvo Ocean Race), as a One Off, which means that only a single such unique vessel has ever been made.
Tomidi was built in Breskens (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen) in the winter of 1984/85 by the renowned shipbuilder Frans Maas of Standfast Yachts BV.
The ship - then sailing under the name Rucanor TriStar - was skippered by Staf Versluys, together with 9 other crew members. They eventually won 1st place in Class D and Staf received the "Joshua" award from Princess Diana for "the Most Outstanding Seamanship".
In 1989/ 1990 the ship again participated in the Whitbread Round the World Race under the name Rucanor Sport, this time under the command of Bruno Dubois - Brussels native and sailmaker. However, the results were not forthcoming due to a setback: a few days after departure from Auckland (New Zealand), the ship had a collision with a whale, say a "technical KO". The race was sailed through, after drying up and repairs in Wellington (NZ).
At the end of 1990 the ship was taken over by Tomidi of which Dirk Gunst is the skipper. At that time, Tomidi had almost 100,000 nautical miles (185,000 km) on the counter. Tomidi is the only Belgian thoroughbred ocean racer that participated twice in the famous Whitbread Round the World Race (now sailed under the name Volvo Ocean Race).
"Sponsorship" never came again. So to achieve the above mentioned goals, and to be able to pay off the ship, a lot of money was needed, obtained by sailing one-day trips to and from Ostend, at the time often with companies and groups, as well as weekend trips and extended (multi-day) weekend trips with groups to ports in England, France or the Netherlands.
During the longer trips (usually in competition with young trainees) the Baltic Sea (Denmark, Poland, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden), the North Sea (Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Denmark) and the entire North Atlantic were "crossed". From Iceland to the Caribbean and from Newfoundland to the Cape Verde Islands...
When it finally turned out that big sailing races without structural sponsoring were unaffordable, Tomidi has since 2004 mainly focused on Sail Training with several very successful participations in the annual Tall Ships Races (2004 to 2008 & 2010 to 2016). The ship was adapted year after year to the latest racing and safety standards, and the interior and engine were completely renewed in 2008, following the plans of the original Rucanor TriStar. In September 2009, the definitive recognition of Tomidi as Flemish Sailing Heritage followed.
It is with mixed feelings that the owner has to get rid of Tomidi. But it would be a deserved tribute to this "Great Lady" to wish her a loving new owner.
