Spanker 712 – Classic Wooden Sailboat from 1972 with Restoration Potential
The Spanker 712 is a classic wooden sailboat, built in 1972 by the renowned Van Wijk shipyard in Woubrugge. This boat is a representative example of the Spanker class, a type of open sailboat that became popular in the Netherlands due to its sporty sailing characteristics and distinctive V-shaped hull. With a length of 5.75 meters and a width of 1.68 meters, this boat is suitable for use on inland waters such as lakes, ponds, and rivers.
Construction and Design
The hull of the Spanker 712 is made of wood, a material traditionally used in boat building for its natural appearance and sailing properties. The boat features a V-shaped hull, which contributes to stable positioning in the water and good performance in various wind conditions. Steering is done via a tiller, located at the rear of the boat, which is typical for this type of sailboat. The rudder is single.
The boat is equipped with one aluminum mast and has a sail plan consisting of a jib, mainsail, and spinnaker. In total, there are three sails, which are described as being in reasonable condition. This offers opportunities for sailors looking for a classic sailing project with room for improvement or customization.
Registration and Documentation
The Spanker 712 is registered with the Royal Dutch Water Sports Association (KNWV) under the registration number "712 Spanker." Documentation is available, including a registration certificate from 1993 and a copy of the registration application, dated April 16, 1993.
Current Condition and Usage History
The boat has not been in the water since 1999 and is currently in a condition that requires restoration work. Known defects are present, and the boat is offered as a project for enthusiasts or individuals with the resources and knowledge to carry out a restoration. The boat has been in family ownership for a long time and was mainly used for pleasure sailing. For most of its active life, the boat was moored in a harbor near Roermond, where it was used for recreational sailing during the sailing season.
The history of the boat is closely linked to the family of the current owner. The Spanker was purchased around 1972 and has since served as a family boat.
Trailer and Transport
A Wijko road trailer is included with the boat. This trailer is single-axle, unbraked, and equipped with a trailer winch. The trailer does not have a license plate and is described as being in reasonable condition. This makes it possible to transport the boat over short distances, although it is advisable to inspect the trailer for technical aspects such as tires, bearings, and winch mechanism before use.
