The 1978 Westerly Longbow 31 is a classic sailboat known for its rugged build quality and versatility. This polyester boat has a length of 9.45 meters, a width of 2.90 meters and a draft of 1.40 meters. Designed by renowned designer Laurent Giles, the hull has a round-bilge shape, which ensures good sailing characteristics and stability on the water. The boat weighs about 5000 kg, which contributes to its stability and sturdiness.
Inside, the Westerly Longbow 31 offers a spacious cabin with a headroom of 1.80 meters, which allows for comfortable movement in the cabin. The layout includes a dinette, cushions, stove, oven, refrigerator and mattresses. The dinette converts to a second double bed, and the bow offers a 180-cm-long double bed. There is plenty of storage space for long sailing trips, and the boat has curtains for extra privacy. The interior does need some attention, such as painting and renewal of the ceiling covering, which offers a project for the future owner.
The boat is powered by a 20-hp Bukh DV20 diesel engine with a 2-cylinder configuration. The engine has been well maintained, with recent replacements of oil, oil filter, fuel filter, cooling water systems and new fuel cock (2024). The tank has a capacity of 80 liters and fuel consumption is approximately 1.5 liters per hour. The engine starts electrically and offers a maximum speed of 12 mph. The boat has a single rudder and is steered by an outside tiller.
In terms of electronics, the boat is well equipped including a Windpilot Atlantic IV windvane system, Lowrance Link 9 DSC/ATIS VHF radio, Standard Horizon GPS Chart CPF300i plotter, Autohelm 3000 autopilot, and a Nasamarine Clipper Duet speed log and depth gauge. The battery present is an Exide EK800 AGM 80Ah, new in 2023. The wiring is also a concern and needs to be renewed.
The Westerly Longbow is equipped with 5 sails, including a new mainsail (Hyde Sails) with single line reefing, a spinnaker, storm jib, and two jibs. The furling and reefing system is a ProFurl furling jib and the mast is equipped with climbing steps. The sails are in adequate condition, with the new mainsail.
The underwater hull has some blistering due to osmosis and there are old cracks at the connection of the bulkhead to the hull. There are also some leaks at the mast foot and at the deck eyes of the rigging, the age of which is unknown. The deck has some damage and leakage, especially around the mast foot, and has softened in places. There are light rainwater leaks at the hatches and the deck painting needs some attention.
The boat is equipped with several useful accessories for both comfort and safety. Outside, the boat has a spray hood, sea railing, swim platform, swim ladder, and davits for transporting a dinghy. The safety equipment includes' a manual bilge pump (Whale Gusher 10, overhauled in 2023) and two anchors (a Lewmar CQR 35lbs and an umbrella anchor with railing holder). The boat also has fenders, lines, cockpit table, and outdoor cushions. The anchor winch is manually operated.
